Attending the 88th IEC General Meeting in Edinburgh, held from October 21 to 25, 2024, was a deeply rewarding experience. Joining experts from across the globe, we engaged in meaningful collaboration, driven by innovation and a united commitment to a shared vision: a safe, sustainable, net-zero, all-electric, and interconnected future. This year, we’re celebrating the 200th anniversary of Lord Kelvin, a visionary who believed in applying science for the benefit of humanity.
Together, we explored transformative solutions that will reshape industries and improve the lives of millions. The meeting underscored the powerful role of standards and technology in addressing global challenges and highlighted our collective dedication to pioneering pathways towards a resilient and sustainable world.
As I stood among a gathering of global experts at the 88th IEC General Meeting in Edinburgh, a profound sense of pride washed over me when Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal entered the venue. Her presence was more than a formal gesture; it was a testament to the importance of collaboration and commitment in the electrotechnical sphere—a commitment that the British Standards Institution (BSI), which hosted this prestigious event, has exemplified.
Welcoming Her Royal Highness was an honour that underscored the enduring connection between progress and leadership. Known for her tireless work ethic and unwavering dedication to public service, she embodies the ideals of resilience and continuous improvement. Her engagement at the meeting symbolized a royal endorsement of our shared mission: advancing the global standards that shape our modern world.
The event, attended by over 1,500 industry leaders and experts, revolved around the theme, “Towards an all-electric and connected society”. For me, as CEO of Tratos Ltd and the Honorary Consul of San Marino to the UK, being part of this event was more than professional engagement; it was an affirmation of the role standards play in driving forward-thinking solutions and fostering international relationships. Since my appointment in 2019, I have strived to bridge the gap between industry, diplomacy, and community action.
Her Royal Highness’s speech at the meeting was particularly inspiring. She spoke not just to the technical minds gathered but to the broader vision of what standardization means for societies striving toward sustainability and connectivity, and the need to leverage technology and collaborative efforts to create educational opportunities and support communities facing challenges.
Seeing Her Royal Highness interact with attendees, share insights, and lend her voice to our collective aspirations was a moment that reaffirmed why these meetings matter. It reminded me that at the heart of all innovation are people—leaders, visionaries, and changemakers who recognize the profound impact of standards on global progress.
The conversations, showcase days, and interactive exhibitions at the meeting reflected a shared commitment to not just economic and technological growth, but also to a future where international cooperation remains at the heart of progress. Her Royal Highness’s presence was a beacon for all, emphasizing that true progress is born from unity, foresight, and shared dedication.
I left Edinburgh more convinced than ever that our combined efforts in developing robust standards will help pave the way to a more sustainable and interconnected world.
